Today’s Buzz: American Eagle To Halt Augusta Flights

Posted by neilgordon On December - 22 - 2011

Chapter 11 is putting the end to the chapter of American Eagle’s return to Augusta.

The Dallas-based airline told Augusta Regional Airport officials Tuesday that it intends to stop flying into Augusta at the end of January.

AMR Corp., the parent company of American Airlines and American Eagle, filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 29.

As part of the reorganization, the regional carrier is disposing of more than a dozen turbo prop aircraft, meaning the puddle jump cities that were served by the small planes will need to be serviced by jets in the fleet.

“They are going to backfill those markets with regional jets, which is the mainstay of American Eagle’s fleet. That lead to some dominoes that fell in certain Eagle markets, including Augusta,” said Tim Smith, a spokesman for American Eagle.

The airline also plans to cancel flights between Dallas and Fayetteville, N.C.; Chicago to Tri-Cities, Tenn., and Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and Los Angeles to Boise.

Eagle has been flying into Augusta twice a day since the summer of 2010. The flights will end Jan. 31.

“Anytime you lose an airline, it is disappointing, especially after their load factors were really strong on start-up. It is dissapointing when there is a good response from the community, but I understand where you’re going through bankruptcy and you’re trying to protect your international company that you have to give it some hard looks,” said Diane Johnston, marketing manager for Augusta Regional.

So far this year, there have been 45,153 total passengers on Eagle flights to and from Augusta. That comes out to a 76.4 percent average load factor, Johnston said.

“The loads at certain times were very, very good. Other times of the year, they were less so,” Smith said. The bookings for January looked “light,” he said.

But there were other factors in determining that Augusta service be shut down, Smith said, citing the financial performance of the market was below the systemwide average.

“It just didn’t build, quite frankly, the way that we hoped it would,” Smith said.

According to a memo to Eagle employees and executives, the flight changes were submitted Tuesday and should be active in the worldwide booking system by the weekend.

Travelers with tickets after Jan. 31 will either get a refund or be accomodated on another airline, Smith said.

Johnston said she hopes Eagle will look at Augusta again when it emerges from bankruptcy.

Smith said he cannot guarantee that the flights will resume after the bankruptcy prcoess. “You never say never either way. This is a long process and we’re less than a month into it.”

The six staffers that were running the ticket counter and gate in Augusta were employees of the airport. Johnston said airport officials have not have a chance to determine what their fate will be at the end of January.

Smith said the spinoff of Eagle as its own company has been put on hold too because of the bankruptcy.

Beech Island’s Contis Davis and her niece Janette Simmons of Augusta were ready to roll Thursday at Gerald Jones Volkswagen, thanks to retired talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

Simmons won tickets to be in the studio audience for one of the last episodes of the “Oprah Winfrey Show,” which aired on Nov. 17 of last year. Davis accompanied Simmons to Chicago for the taping of the show, which had the theme “Oprah’s Favorite Things.” Winfrey gifted the entire studio audience that day with her favorite things, from iPads to cashmere clothing to food items to Nordstrom’s gift certificates to the piece de resistance – new VW Beetles.

“The car was the last thing she announced,” Davis said. “Janette was fainting – I had to hold her up, she was so excited.”
Davis and Simmons took possession of their new cars Thursday afternoon at Gerald Jones Volkswagen on Washington Road, and got an up-close-and-personal look at the redesigned 2012 Beetle’s new features. Davis claimed the red Beetle, while Simmons went with silver. The show had taken care of the taxes and fees attached to the new cars, according to Davis.

“This is great exposure for our cause. They got their new cars before we even got to see them, since they’re the new model year,” said Gerald Jones Volkswagen General Manager David Jones.

The redesigned Beetle features a beefed-up 170 horsepower engine, front-wheel drive and an enlarged body and cabin. Pre-release specs list the car with the 2.5-liter automatic transmission racking up 22 miles per gallon in city driving, 29 mpg on highway driving and 25 mpg on mixed driving.

“I cried through the whole show. I cried before the car, and I cried after,” said Simmons. “I was just excited to see Oprah. I had no idea we’d get gifts. I was telling my friends, I’m going to make Nov. 16 a prayer day for Oprah Winfrey and a prayer day for the world, because that’s the day the taping took place, Nov. 16.”

Today’s Buzz: Bridgestone Impact A Big Splash

Posted by neilgordon On September - 23 - 2011

A mentality of not abandoning manufacturing industries despite the demise of textile-making could have played a role in the attraction of another Bridgestone tire making facility in Aiken County.

“The best thing that Aiken’s done is never give up on manufacturing when a lot of parts of this country have. There is still a future, and this shows that there is,” said University of South Carolina economist Doug Woodward on Thursday, a day after the Japanese tire maker announced its decision to spend $1.2 billion on a new plant and the expansion of its existing facility in Graniteville.

“They’ve had success there, and they’re building on that success. … This is a substantial capital investment, and there’s not a lot of that going around these days,” Woodward added.

Meetings between Bridgestone representatives and county officials continued Thursday on construction plans, said Will Williams, the director of the Economic Development Partnership for Aiken and Edgefield counties.

Bridgestone will spend $900 million on a new 1.5 million-square-foot plant in Sage Mill Industrial Park to make off-road radial tires. Work on clearing the site will begin in the middle of October, Williams said. It will ramp up to 550 jobs.

Bridgestone will also spend $346 million to expand its existing passenger tire plant, which should begin in November. That will create 122 more jobs.

What’s the impact of $1.2 billion in capital outlay? Just compare it to the gross metropolitan product of the area, about $17 billion a year, said Simon Medcalfe, a finance professor at Augusta State University.

“South Carolina does a good job of attracting these kinds of jobs. Think of some of the headline ones that they’ve had over the last decade, BMW plant and the Boeing plant,” Medcalfe said. “We in the Augusta area do a good job in manufacturing businesses. You think about the decline in manufacturing in the United States, and we here have an outsized presence.”

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, there are 19,900 manufacturing sector jobs in the Augusta metro area.

“So much bad news, this is a shot in the arm, a real boost to confidence in what we should feel about our economy in Aiken and throughout the state,” Woodward said. “It is going to make a difference over the long term. It will have an immediate impact; there will be some construction. But it is a long-term commitment to the region. And I think that says a lot about the region’s ability to compete.”

It also comes at a good time for Aiken County because of the contraction at Savannah River Site.

“You need something to compensate,” Woodward said.

The jobs don’t directly correlate, nuclear scientist to tire production, but the new jobs will have an impact on the working class in the region.

When considering the economic impact of the project, it doesn’t stop with the jobs at Bridgestone. Manufacturing jobs have one of the highest multiplier effects, where the payrolls get pumped back into the economy and indirectly create or sustain other jobs in the community.

“The wages are pretty good. This is going to be an above-average multiplier effect as every direct job will result in two to three additional jobs to the region,” or 1,700 to 2,500 jobs, Woodward said. “It is good for retailers and other services.”

Williams said Bridgestone currently pays more than $19 per hour at the passenger tire facility, but there is no information about whether the new facility would pay more or less.

Williams said the first passenger tire to go down the line at the expansion should happen in the summer of 2013. The first phase of construction on the new tire plant should be completed then, too, although the production won’t begin until the beginning of 2014.

Williams said hiring for the off-road tire facility will begin early next year.

“Since this technology doesn’t exist anywhere except Japan, there’s going to be some substantial training (in Japan),” Williams said.
