Kenny Thomas has proven his ability on the diamond. Now USC Aiken’s all-time winningest baseball coach, who has won 950 games as a head coach at the college level, is hoping to prove his worth in the kitchen.
Thomas and his wife Judy, along with owner Butch Roberson, have opened Aiken’s newest restaurant, Coach T’s Diner, at 1552 Whiskey Road in Aiken, across from the Mitchell Shopping Center.
The establishment, which opened Monday, serves everything from fried green tomatoes to fried bologna sandwiches, from baseball steaks to key lime pie and is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.
Aside from a menu that has something for every palate, Thomas and Roberson are most pleased with the atmosphere. There’s a large bar where diners can sit and chat with the folks behind the counter, two indoor dining sections with tables and chairs and an outside deck, complete with heaters for the winter months.
Roberson said he hopes Coach T’s transforms into a “Floyd’s Barber Shop” feel.
In fact, you’ll find Floyd, Andy, Barney and all the other Mayberry residents on Coach T’s four big-screen televisions if you come through the doors at lunch time. Thomas said they’ll show “Andy Griffith Show” reruns on the screens at lunch time, when hungry patrons can also sample the lunch special, which includes a special meat each day and multiple sides from which to choose.
“It’s a local place for people that want to hang out,” Thomas said. “There’s no strangers, and we have a lot of fun.”
The idea for Coach T’s Diner grew out of the success of Coach T’s Lunch Wagon, which the couple opened in April out of a trailer on Dougherty Road.
“The Lunch Wagon was a good way to get started,” said Thomas. “It did really well in the spring and fall, but the summer was tough, because it was so hot and people didn’t want to sit outside. But it gave us some valuable experience and got us going. This is a whole new ball game. It’s something we’ve dreamed about for years.”
Coach T’s will still have all of those same favorites from the Lunch Wagon – Nathan’s all-beef hot dogs, chicken salad, pimento cheese, chick fingers, fried honey buns and more – at the new restaurant, but it has also added steaks, salad, pizza, wings and what’s quickly becoming a specialty, sweet potato waffle fries. Friday night will be a catfish dinner night.
“We’ve got a little bit of everything,” said Thomas. “It’s a great menu. It’s not too many items, but it’s a wide variety.”
Coach T’s Diner is also the new home of ASTV’s weekly sports talk show, “Carolina Outdoors Presents: On the Sports Front.”
The show, which features local, college and professional sports, prize giveaways and questions from the crowd, is taped every Thursday from 7 until 8 p.m., in one of the two dining rooms at Coach T’s Diner.
Past guests have included South Carolina baseball coach Ray Tanner, professional golfer Kevin Kisner, Dekoda Watson of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and college and high school athletes and coaches from across Aiken County.
Sports fans are encouraged to come participate in the show each week or watch it live on ASTV, Atlantic Broadband channel 95, or at www.aikenstandard.com.
“We’re very proud to have the show here,” said Thomas. “It’s live television, and we’re liable to do anything on there.”
Although the restaurant – which features USCA and other baseball memorabilia on the walls, including some from former MLB star Roberto Hernandez, who took a tour of the restaurant last week – has already opened its doors, Coach T’s will be celebrating its grand opening on Thursday with specials, live radio and television broadcasts and more.
