Today’s Buzz: GOING OUT OF BUSINESS – LAST DAY IS TODAY!

Posted by neilgordon On June - 30 - 2011

TODAY is the last day in business for the Town and Country and UFINISH IT furniture store. They are finishing up a going out of business store. They are on Washington Road in West Augusta very close to Davis Road on the opposite side of the street as the West Town Shopping Center.

A few years back they both moved in together to try and cut down on costs.

Buzz on Biz founder Neil Gordon stopped in yesterday and noticed about 7 or 8 patio furniture sets still available and some wood furniture…that well…need finishing.

The regular price tag on the nice outdoor patio furniture was in the $1,500-2,000 range, which may explain why they didn’t make it—with the K-Mart, Walmart, Lowe’s, Target’s nearby with nice furniture at half of the price.

Today’s Buzz: Area Hotel Group Avoids Shutdown

Posted by neilgordon On June - 29 - 2011

EDITOR’S NOTE:  The Gordon Group PR\ Buzz on Biz, LLC entered into a marketing agreement with this hotel group in 2010 and nearly filed suit on an approximate $4,000 debt, before the owner finally paid the balance in full.

** REPRINTED FROM NEWS 12 **

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Several hotels across the area made good on a promise to pay up before the end of the day. The moves came after the city threatened revoke their licenses.

“There are actually nine that we have on the agenda for Thursday,” said Rob Sherman with the license and inspections department.

The nine hotels are part of a group called Augusta Hospitality Management. They were two months behind on thousands of dollars in fees and taxes.

“I would rather make the payment than get closed down,” said License and Inspections Director Rob Sherman.

The following nine hotels were impacted:

* Baymont Inn & Suites, 629 Frontage Road

* Super 8 Motel, 3026 Washington Road

* Comfort Inn, 2911 Riverwest Dr.

* Microtel Inn, 2909 Riverwest Dr.

* Quality Inn (Airport), 2926 Peach Orchard Road

* Wingate Inn, 2123 Noland Connector

* Microtel Inn, 2176 Gordon Highway

* Quality Inn Medical, 1455 Walton Way

* Econo Lodge, 1103 15th St.

Sherman said he is just trying to get the message across that payments need to be made.

“The last thing we want to do is close them down, but at the same time it is taxes that we have to collect,” Sherman said.

Much of the money would go toward new construction projects like the Trade, Exhibit, and Events Center downtown. The group owed more than $127,000 at a time when the number of heads in beds in local hotels is up.

“Total hotel revenue is up over 9 percent in Augusta,” said Barry White with the visitor’s bureau.

That doesn’t include the more than 2,000 people in town for the USA Cycling National championships.

“It has been a very positive sign for us and the best year that we have ever had,” White said.

David Beerman, of the Augusta Hospitality Management Group, said he hates it had to come to this.

“But it is the nature of the business,”  Beerman said. “We are taking care of it today.”

The group made good on that promise. Sherman tells News 12 that as of 5 p.m., the full amount was paid.
