Today’s Buzz: North Augusta Leadership Class Project

Posted by neilgordon On May - 31 - 2011

Goal:

Create a handicap accessible outdoor classroom environment that can be utilized by all teachers and students at North Augusta Elementary School.

Background:

The North Augusta Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and School Improvement Committee (SIC) sought support in order to build an Outdoor Classroom on the grounds of NAES.  The project is to construct an outdoor classroom that will serve as a shaded place for teachers to create hand’s on and real life learning experiences for the students which will improve their quality of education.  The classroom will support many of South Carolina’s science standards and will also give the teachers a chance to make book-to-life concept connections for the students.  The classroom will also support the special needs program at NAES by giving those students a different learning environment.  Additionally, in a study done by a consortium of 16 State Education Departments across the U.S. found that schools with “hands-on environmental curriculums” saw 100% improvement in student behavior attendance, and attitudes along with a 77% improvement on standardized tests.

Description:

The project will consist of building a 24’ x 30’ covered shelter which will include concrete foundations, concrete slab, colored split face concrete block columns, stained wood beams & trusses, stained tongue & groove wood roof decking, a metal roof, and picnic tables.  Some additional sidewalks will be constructed to connect the new shelter to existing sidewalks for accessibility.  If funding/resources/donations allow, the project will include the installation of electrical outlets, lights, and fans.  The classroom will be constructed adjacent to a nature trail.  This trail will serve as an extension of the building for the science teachers.

Funding:

The PTO raised $5000 and obtained a $2500 grant from Home Depot.  The building will cost more than $7500 to construct.  Leadership North Augusta’s Class of 2011 has many connections with local contractors and suppliers and is seeking donations in materials and labor to bridge the gap between the money raised and the final construction costs.  Anyone interested in making monetary, material, or labor donations for this project can contact Fletcher Dickert of Leadership North Augusta Class of 2011 @ fdickert@allenbatchelor.com.  A plaque will be installed on the structure listing the names of all individuals or businesses that make contributions for this project.

AUGUSTA, GA — The Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Augusta Magazine, are pleased to announce ten of Augusta’s most outstanding young professionals. The young professionals that have been selected as the “Top 10 in 10” entered into a competitive nomination process in March and have emerged as this year’s most promising and rising stars.

“The 10 in 10 recipients demonstrate what makes our community unique and full of promise,” says Sue Parr, Chamber President.  Each recipient is featured in the June/July issue of Augusta Magazine, will receive a submitted nomination on their behalf to Georgia Trend’s 40 Under 40 Competition this year and will be honored at the Chamber’s Member Economic Luncheon on June 22nd. The luncheon will include a presentation and recognition by Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver, a former Georgia Trend 40 Under 40 Recipient.

In submitting nominations on behalf of each recipient to Georgia Trend Magazine, the Chamber’s goal is to expand recognition for Augusta’s young professional talent throughout the State of Georgia.  In 2010, Top 10 in 10 Recipient Rebekah Henry with the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art was featured in the publication along with 39 other young rising stars in the state.

Nominations were submitted and reviewed by a selection committee panel of business leaders in Augusta.  The following professionals have been named the Augusta Region’s Top Ten in Ten Young Professionals to Watch:

Christopher A. Cosper Age: 32  Attorney

Matt Driskell Age: 33  Director of Managed Care & Reimbursement

Lindsay S. Thetford Age: 28  Marketing Community Relations Manager

The Augusta Chronicle

“We salute the achievements of these outstanding individuals and we look forward to watching their professional careers grow and prosper,” says Parr.

Young professionals between the ages of 25 and 35 are expected to have more influence on the future of economic roles and lifestyles than many generations that have come before them.  Cities across the country are vying to retain and import a generation that is thought to be green, highly educated, and one that is radically transforming work environments and social networks.  Most business development experts agree that cities that create a landscape and culture that cultivates young professionals will be at a competitive advantage in terms of business attraction and quality workforce.

The Top 10 in 10 Young Professionals to Watch was developed in 2009 by the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce to annually highlight ten young professionals (ages 25-35) in the Augusta Region.
