Amazon Says ‘Majority’ of Cloud Problems Resolved
Amazon said it resolved a majority of the technical problems that plagued its Web services business last week and through the weekend, and prompted many websites to either crash or perform slowly.
Amazon, which rents Web services and storage to companies, suffered from a glitch in one of its data centers that caused many companies to move to contingency plans as they waited for a full recovery.
Amazon disclosed early Thursday it was experiencing “instance connectivity, latency and error rates” with one of its data centers in northern Virginia. Start-ups such as Foursquare, Quora and Reddit suffered from service problems last week related to Amazon’s technical issues. Those three sites now appear to be operating regularly.
Amazon’s Web-based services are often listed as a model for other such offerings. It allows users to run programs and store information remotely over the Internet, accessing the applications over the so-called “cloud” and eliminating the cost of operating the equipment themselves.
IPhone Stored Location in Test Even if Disabled
Apple Inc.’s iPhone is collecting and storing location information even when location services are turned off, according to a test conducted by The Wall Street Journal.
The location data appear to be collected using cellphone towers and Wi-Fi access points near a user’s phone and don’t appear to be transmitted back to Apple. Apple and Google have both previously said that the data they receive is anonymous and that users can turn it off by disabling location services. However, the iPhone is collecting and storing location data even when location services are turned off.
Still, the fact that the iPhone is collecting and storing location data—even when location services are turned off—is likely to renew questions about how well users are informed about the data being gathered by their cellphones. The fact that the iPhone stores months’ worth of location data was disclosed by two researchers last week.
The discovery of an unencrypted location file on the iPhone created an uproar among people concerned that their phones could be searched and their location data used against them. On Saturday, Rep. Edward Markey (D., Mass.) called for a congressional investigation into the iPhone location storage, saying that unprotected location information on the phone could put children at risk from predators who hack their phones.
