Today’s Buzz: SUBWAY® of CSRA Announces Contest to Recognize Students’ Healthy Lifestyles

His message is simple: Play More, Eat Right and Push Away the TV and Computer Screen. This is the P.E.P. talk hundreds of local students will hear, as SUBWAY® national spokesperson Jared Fogle shares his experiences as an obese child and encourages children to eat right and exercise. Jared is walking the talk too, as he trains to run in the 2010 ING New York City Marathon on November 7.

Jared visits the CSRA to help kick off the SUBWAY FRESH FIT® Video and Poster Competition, inviting students ages 5 to 14 to show how they are fighting back against childhood obesity. Two grand-prize winners will receive a $1,000 fitness grant for their school AND $1,000 in SUBWAY® cards.

The SUBWAY FRESH FIT® competition will take place from Aug. 23 to Oct. 4. The contest is designed to spotlight the creative and fun ways youth can get the exercise they need. Elementary to middle school students can demonstrate how they stay healthy and fit by either drawing a picture or recording a 30 to 60 second video. Entries will be reviewed by a panel of local judges, including MCGHealth Clinical Nutrition Manager Jessica Baye. Entry forms are available at participating SUBWAY® restaurants in the CSRA. More information on the contest is available atwww.subwaysc.com.

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 2:00 – 2:30 p.m. – Assembly with message by Jared and student challenge to take P.E.P. Pledge, Lake Forest Hills Elementary School, 3140 Lake Forest Drive, Augusta, GA 30909

SUBWAY® restaurants in the CSRA are launching the SUBWAY FRESH FIT® Video and Poster competition to bring awareness to the childhood obesity issue by rewarding youth for being physically active and making healthy food choices.

Last year, more than 200 students participated in the SUBWAY FRESH FIT® contest by submitting a poster or video showing how they stay healthy and fit. The winning entries were submitted by students at Lincoln County Elementary School in Lincolnton and Blakeney Elementary School in Waynesboro.

Today’s Buzz: Abbi’s Retail Closing/Opening Maybe Delayed

NOTE FROM NEIL GORDON, BUZZ ON BIZ, LLC PRESIDENT

In conversations with the owner, she is telling me that things are moving slowly and they may not be ready to OPEN a new Fort Gordon coffee shop and CLOSE Fury’s Ferry road in September—could be delayed some.

She says they will continue to be open on Furys Ferry Road through February 2011 for periodic liquidation sales of coffee bags etc…and they will continue to sell those on line to anyone who wants to buy them….www.abbiscoffeemill.com

Once again, Abbi’s has been open for 13 years on Furys Ferry Road—-well before any other coffee shops like Starbucks or Metro Coffee House brewed their first pot.

Today’s Buzz: Sample Columbia County Signs Installed

SOURCE: COLUMBIA COUNTY CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU

Evans, GA- August 19, 2010-Columbia County has two sample signs, installed by the Roads and Bridges Department today, that are available for residents to view.

The signs have been installed on Flowing Wells Road at Wheeler Road and the second on Stevens Creek Road. County residents can share their opinion on the samples by taking a survey on the County’s website (www.columbiacountyga.gov) or the CVB’s website (www.visitcocoga.com).

The survey responses will be recorded through September 20, 2010.

The signs are a project of the Signage/Wayfinding Committee that was developed in July 2009 as a result of the Columbia County Convention & Visitors Bureau’s market research study conducted by Judy Randall of Randall Travel Marketing. The study recommended that a community group be formed with the following goals:

Project Goals

  • Develop distinctive gateways at all major county entrances and improve signage/wayfinding to create a “sense of place” for Columbia County, and to mitigate frustration with traffic.

o      Gateways are needed to announce arrival in Columbia County and provide a unique sense of place.

o      Signage and wayfinding needs to be improved in order to efficiently get people to points of interest and cash registers, as well as to offset frustration with traffic congestion.

  • It is also hoped that with an increase in directional signage, growth for Columbia County businesses will be encouraged.
  • Develop recommendations to provide to community leaders for discussion and development of overall plan

The committee is made up of representatives from the County Community & Leisure Services, Construction and Maintenance, and Development Services Divisions, as well as Planning and Zoning, the Chamber of Commerce, the Development Authority, the CCVB, and a representative from GDOT. For more information, contact the Columbia County Convention & Visitors Bureau at 706.447.7677.
